At 5pm today, peaceful protestor from around Australia joined Wiradjuri Elder, Neville Williams to take the Sacred Fire of Peace and Healing to the site office of Barrick Golds’Lake Cowal Gold Mine.

At 12pm today, the site of Canadian mining company Barrick Gold’s Lake Cowal Gold Project was occupied by a national network of peaceful protestors against the Cyanide-leaching mine, calling for an immediate stop to all development and operations. The Protestors have said they will stay until the mine is closed and the area is returned to the Rightful Owners within the Wiradjuri Nation.

International Coalition to protect Lake Cowal are gathering in an ancient sacred ceremony for peace and healing at Lake Cowal, 47 km north-east of West Wyalong, central western NSW. There will be three days of ceremony and actions beginning on Friday 22 October with the serving of the Notice to Quit operations at Lake Cowal to Canadian mining company Barrick Gold.

Friends of the Earth International today welcomed the news that Dr Wangari Maathai, had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her social and environmental work. Maathai, a patron of Friends of the Earth International, is the first African woman to win the prize.

In the last days before the election it is clear that the Coalition has profoundly failed on almost all key environmental issues. The Prime Minister's announcement on forests was an enormous disappointment. Taken more broadly, it mirrors the Coalition's failure on most environmental issues: amongst other short-comings they have failed to adopt strong greenhouse policies and only committed one third of the water that scientists agree is needed to help restore the Murray River to health.

Recent statements by Australian Ministers demonstrate the pressure of the international spotlight after Russia announced its intention to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. The key question is: is this enough to move the Howard government to commit Australia to the only international agreement on climate change?
