With 24 hours to go at the UN Climate Talks in Marrakech, Morroco, Environment Ministers continue high level negotiations to reach a final agreement. The last 10 days have seen serious attempts to undermine the principles signed up to in July under the Bonn agreement, particularly from the Russian, Japanese, Australian and Canadian delegations. But if Ministers adhere to the principles of the Bonn agreement, as they have on compliance, rapid progress can be made. While these talks are largely technical, with few new political trade-offs to be made, the arrival of Ministers is essential to ensure conclusion of the talks and the adoption of the conference decisions. If a complete package of legal text is agreed here, the fundamental architecture of the Kyoto regime will be in place, enabling even recalcitrant countries to ratify, and paving the way for future emissions reductions.

Since the election of the Howard Coalition Government in 1996 the Mirrar People of Kakadu have fought to stop the Jabiluka uranium mine from going ahead. Jabiluka is part of our traditional country. It is part of us and we say no to mining. We have taken our fight across Australia and the world and many people have heard our call and supported us. We are still fighting to protect our country, culture and sacred sites.

Friends of the Earth has strongly criticised comments made by PM John Howard and Health Minister Michael Wooldridge in support of a new reactor in Sydney. Claims by the Federal Government that a reactor is critical for nuclear medicine have been consistently proven to be baseless. The comments were made after the ALP stated its opposition to a new reactor in suburban Sydney at Lucas Heights.

National environment group Friends of the Earth has welcomed the ALP¹s commitment to no new uranium mines, reactor or radioactive waste dumping. The ALP has unveiled a principled response to nuclear issues as a key part of its environment policy launch in Perth today. The position is in sharp contrast to the Federal government¹s outdated obsession with the nuclear industry.

National environmental group, Friends of the Earth Australia, was surprised and disappointed by today's statement on the environment by the Prime Minister.
"The Coalition has consistently rated poorly on its environmental track record since its election in 1996, and this long awaited announcement was an opportunity to address the issue of environmental sustainability seriously. A visionary policy would have been greeted with praise by environmental organisations, yet today¹s announcement has become one more missed opportunity."
