Friends of the Earth Melbourne has condemned the final Murray Darling Basin Plan, announced by Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke today, as a sell-out plan that defies the best available science and imposes unacceptable risks on future generations.
Friends of the Earth spokesperson Will Mooney said "Mr Burke has only committed to 2,750 GL to the Murray Basin river system".

This morning Friends of the Earth and Residents from Jondaryan and Oakey called for the end of the Jondaryan coal dump with two people scaling New Hope's 30 metre high pile of coal and dropping a banner. After half an hour on top of the coal dump, the two were arrested and removed from the coal dump site.
The coal dump is 1.5km from the town of Jondaryan and coal dust is contaminating the air and water of the locals. New Hope Coal recently applied for an expansion of what was supposed to be a 'temporary' coal dump.

Diana Horsburgh, a founder-member of Friends of the Earth Kuranda, died at her home in Kuranda in the early morning of Saturday, 6th October 2012 surrounded by close family and friends.
Di was an inspiring activist. She’ll be greatly missed by many in the local community – not least by her friends and colleagues in FoE Kuranda.
Her untimely death leaves a large gap in this region’s environment movement.

Environmental organisation Friends of the Earth today released a report about drinking water quality issues in South Australia. The report was compiled from a 9000 page Freedom of Information request from SA Water which covered water quality results between January 2000 and July 2012.

The Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (ANFA) celebrated its 15th anniversary on the weekend of October 5-7 2012 on the land of the Arrernte people in Alice Springs.
The Alliance brings together Aboriginal people, environment, health groups and trade union representatives to discuss the impacts of the nuclear industry on land and communities.
ANFA reaffirmed its opposition to uranium mining, exploration and dumping of radioactive waste on Aboriginal land.

Twice as much water as Cubbie Station’s giant 460 gigalitre (GL) water entitlement is effectively sent overseas every year in the form of irrigated cotton from the Murray-Darling, according to new research released today by Friends of the Earth.
The analysis compiled Australian government data on annual cotton exports and irrigation water use from 2005 to 2011 and calculates the volume of water embodied in Australia’s export cotton crop.
