Victoria’s peak environment groups welcomed Steve Bracks increased protection of Cobboboonee in the South-West and some old growth forests in Eastern Victoria today, but significantly more needed to be done, the groups said.

NAIROBI, KENYA, November 14, 2006 -- By insisting that the 'Convention Dialogue' it chairs should replace the climate change agreement known as the Kyoto Protocol, the Australian government is offending the 165 nations that ratified the United Nations agreement and have gathered here to start negotiations for the Protocol's continuation after 2012. The groups are taking part in actions to commemorate the lives and deaths of the Nigerian writer and activist Ken Saro Wiwa and eight others who were executed 11 years ago today.

Friends of the Earth Australia is concerned that the Australian government will continue to mislead the international community as well as the Australian people with rash statements made this week that the Kyoto Protocol is dead and the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (AP6) is the real solution to climate change.
