The recent controversy about uranium exploration on the Fleurieu Peninsula illustrates some of the contradictions behind Mike Rann’s policies on uranium mining. Much uranium exploration in South Australia is subsidised through the SA Government’s Plan for Accelerating Expansion (PACE) program.

September 27, 2006 is the 50th anniversary of the first nuclear bomb test at Maralinga in South Australia, with commemorations to be held across the country.
A total of seven nuclear bombs were tested at Maralinga, the first of which was similar in size to the 'Fat Man' plutonium bomb dropped on Nagasaki during World War II.

Friends of the Earth Adelaide will award mining company BHP Billiton the inaugural South Australian Blinky Award, in a red carpet ceremony which coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the first atomic bomb test at Maralinga. The Blinky, a three-eyed gold fish, is intended to draw attention to the massive environmental impacts of corporations, especially those involved in the mining and nuclear industries. The award ceremony will take place at 10.00am on Wednesday 27 September 2006, outside BHP Billiton’s offices, 55 Grenfell Street, Adelaide.

Thirty conservationists have shut down logging operations in the Goongerah township water catchment east of Melbourne.
Logging operations have been halted by three tree platforms suspended in the canopy, as well as a tripod stopping access to the forest in which logging was taking place.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2006 – The World Bank’s credibility is in jeopardy. Most of the 500 campaigners accredited to attend the Sept. 19-20 Singapore World Bank and International Monetary Fund annual meetings, usually attended by hundreds of campaigners, will boycott their meetings with the Bank.

The new National Nanotechnology Strategy Taskforce report "Options for a National Nanotechnology Strategy", released yesterday by Industry Minister Macfarlane, fails to address the most significant public interests issues raised by nanotechnology, suggesting that the Federal Government is setting itself up for a repeat of the backlash that greeted genetically engineered foods.
