Nuclear Royal Commission needs balance

Media Release − 20 April 2015

Dr Jim Green, national nuclear campaigner with Friends of the Earth, Australia, said:

"Kevin Scarce promised a 'balanced' royal commission but three of the five members of his 'expert panel' are pro-nuclear, with just one critic. There's nothing wrong with including nuclear advocates on the panel but there should be balance.

Prime Minister Abbott’s wind energy rhetoric out of step with medical experts

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has strayed beyond his area of expertise by lending weight to unsubstantiated claims wind energy is linked to adverse health impacts.

RET announcement devastating for jobs, investment, climate action

Friends of the Earth is deeply disappointed that the Abbott government's refusal to back renewable energy has lead to today's outcome on the Renewable Energy target (RET).

"Today, the Abbott government has agreed to cut the Renewable Energy Target by 20 percent. This means less clean energy, less jobs, and less investment for Australia," says Friends of the Earth's Yes 2 Renewables coordinator, Leigh Ewbank.

"2,500 renewable energy jobs have been lost on PM Tony Abbott's watch. This cut to the RET means 3,680 less jobs by 2020."

Support FoE and support green energy at the same time.

With the continued attempts by the federal government to undermine the Renewable Energy Target (RET), we need to stay focused on federal politics to ensure the best possible policy environment for the uptake of renewable power.

Friends of the Earth, Australia has today written to Kevin Scarce, head of the SA government's Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission, asking him to revisit his decision not to include weapons proliferation risks in the Royal Commission's issues paper dealing with uranium mining.

Dr Jim Green, national nuclear campaigner with Friends of the Earth, Australia, said:

Another blockage removed from RET negotiations. But biomass still a deal breaker.

Friends of the Earth release. May 18, 2015.

The year long standoff between the Coalition and the renewable energy sector is finally over, with common sense prevailing, and the Coalition withdrawing its demand for regular reviews of the target.
